NATIONALISM IN POST-NAPOLEONIC EUROPE

WHAT IS NATIONALISM?

- An unique society became formed subconsciously called a Nation
- Nationalism was one's belief in identifying themselves with a nation
- Nationalism lead to a unity between similar nationalities
- Nationalistic ideas had started before Napoleon's time during the French Revolution

CULTURAL NATIONALISM:
- Nationalists of each nation originally started as patriotic individuals, who called attention to a nation's unique traditions and cultures
- Johann Gottfried von Herder engineered songs praising the German "Volks"
- The Brothers Grimm, were also nationalists that accumulated German folk literature and song to express the values of the Volks
The Star of David, which is the contemporary symbol of the Jewish faith
ANTI-SEMITISM AND ZIONISM:
- To follow in the footsteps of other nationalities, Jews formed their own campaign for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine, called Zionism
- As Jews were scattered around Europe, and were made up of minorities, they became persecuted by nationalist leaders.
- The idea in supporting the persecution of Jews was called Anti-Semitism
- Jews were persecuted strongly in areas such as Russia and Poland, where cossacks led pogroms to massacre Jewish communities.
- Zionism led the Jews to Palestine where problems still persist between Israelis and Palestinians
